2 Thessalonians 1: 11
So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things you faith prompts you to do.
In this letter Paul is writing to encourage the believers in Thessalonica not to give up. They seem to be overwhelmed and worried about end times. Not only with Jesus coming back but dark forces at work in the present too. It must have seemed to some to be pointless to keep up the good work. Boy can I identify with this feeling, can’t you? We have all felt that way. Bishop Desmond Tutu was quoted once as saying ‘there is only one way to eat an elephant, one bite at a time’.
This quote is one that is used a lot now, or at least I use it a lot, and it addresses the very human reality that we can easily lose heart, motivation, and drive to keep going when we focus on the ‘bigness’ of something. Not only the bigness in this case but these believers were convinced that they were in the end times and apparently asking themselves ‘why it mattered’ to do ‘all the things’. Again I can so identity with this feeling. I have been there many times. When you are swimming upstream or feeling like you are taking two steps forward and then life comes along and pushes you three steps back it can feel useless, like you are just spinning your wheels or chasing your own tail. Does the analogy of a hamster wheel sound familiar too?
Here is why it matters and this is for each of us to look inward and discover for ourselves. You are fully alive until you are not breathing anymore. Until you are dead you are alive and it matters. Your own experience of this life is determined by the quality of your thoughts and the effort you put into your own life and others. Integrity. When you know better you should do better because it feels better. When we feel better we treat others better and we are treated better by others. But we aren’t doing it for that reason, it is just a nice side effect, we are intrinsically motivated.
When your are intrinsically motivated, you are able to stay focused. You are able to look at the bigness of life and take a deep breath and get to work. You are able to keep going even when it might not seem like it matters. Because you know it does, because you matter and life matters and should be respected and honored by those still breathing. We honor our creator when we honor his creation which is life. Life is a gift what we do with it is a gift back to him. When I switch my mindset and became intrinsically motivated, life became an adventure to look forward to everyday! I think Paul was like minded this was and was encouraging others to see their value individually and collectively and become invested in their own value and worthiness.
