📝 Reflection
Genesis 6: 8-10
'But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord . These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. '
Ok, today’s reading is the entire story of Noah and the Ark, chapters 6-10. You might be wondering while I am tilting today ‘peace on earth’ when God decided to flood the earth and wipe out man and animal kind except for a select few. He was fed up and angry with man, so he pushed the reset button. All except Noah and three of his sons and all of their wives.
The name Noah means peace, rest or comfort or consolation. So ‘Peace’ found favor with God. The name Shem means name of fame, Ham means, heat or hot, Japheth means expansion or may he extend; beautiful. Interesting that the main characters are a Father and 3 sons were chosen📝. I took pages of notes this morning and I don’t have time for that here and now nor do you.
I also took note specifically of the 2 by 2 references everywhere and the number 7. I see the duality of being-ness represented. As thinking conscious beings as soon as we put a label or a name to something, that must mean that something other than that thing and also it’s opposite must exist. God gets fed up with Humans being god like in their attitude. There are some strange references to giants; ’In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times. ‘
People back then apparently lived to nearly 1000 yers, Noah was 600 when he built the Ark, his sons were in the 100’s. They were up to no good, there was no peace and no rest I am guessing. So he decided to flood the earth and establish a new order, peace and rest and limit the age that men could live to 120 going forward. So he put his ‘peace’ in a boat for his name to be made famous (Shem) and expand (Japheth), but he also had to put some heat or anger in the mix with the addition of Ham.
The animal kind were saved by Noahs selection with direction from God. Male and female were needed. Life had to be preserved and allowed to continue. We need both to create new life. We are dependent. We are independent beings, or we like to think we are. But God designed dependency into the system. His desire is for peace to reign, but as we know we humans have ravenous appetites that can keep us restless. As he warned Cain in chapter 4 'watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”
We can’t eliminate our darkness, but we can subdue it and become it’s master with God’s help. As our inner peace and rest with God’s help gets in charge, we can rise above the chaos of the world as represented by the boat and the water and spread and help make God’s name famous and expand our own consciousness and awareness and help spread God’s by our example. The anger or heat though is always there keeping us in check, requiring us to seek humility and dependence on God.
After the flood was over and they were back on dry land God promised to never flood the earth again. ’Then God said, “I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. '
God wants peace to reign in our hearts and minds, he wants us to be able to float above the chaos that can consume us and drown us. We can subdue our egos or more primal self and be it’s master. After the flood is over and they are back on dry land, God I can’t help but think and link this Ark and the covenant that God delivers to Noah through the rainbow as the foreshadowing of the Ark of the covenant and the Temple coming in Jerusalem and then eventual in the form of Jesus and then to us through the Holy Spirit. His mission throughout HIStory is to help each of us and ‘us’ collectively, 2 by 2 maybe even, find our rest in him and peace on earth.
*📝Some other interesting notes: after the flood is over, 1 year (10 months and 2 months, significant) and they can come out of the Ark, the rainbow is presented as a sign of God’s convent and promise that he won’t wipe out man again. There is the number seven again…seven colors. The number of perfection. Made up of 3 and 4, spiritual and physical perfection numbers. So many patterns, at one point the reference is even made that the Ark floated high above the earth - 22 feet above the highest peak, 2 by 2 again.. It rained for 40 days, 40 nights foreshadowing Jesus being tested in the wilderness, and Exodus. I hope you read this story and take your own notes and ponder what God might say to you in your quiet time. This is such a complex and practical book of wisdom that is telling larger stories of humanity and our place in the cosmos and with God through the stories. Don’t just see Noah and his sons as literal people even though they might be, there is so more to the story! So much more!
