📝 Reflection
Galatians 4: 26, 31
“But the other woman, Sarah, represents the heavenly Jerusalem. She is the free woman, and she is our mother. So, dear brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman; we are children of the free woman.”
Have you ever experienced a knowing when to pay attention when God, spirit, universe (whatever fits your world view) keeps putting a certain thing in your awareness from different sources? This is the word becoming for me right now. Everywhere I turn it is in my thoughts or I am hearing it come out of some else’s mouth, and from people in my life that don’t know each other. I always pay attention and am looking for these clues now. I have read so many good books, listened so so many great podcasts, gotten connected with ideas, concepts and people I wouldn’t otherwise have if I just saw this as a coincidence and ignored them.
I now see this as ‘Godincedeces’, God winks, double or triple witnessing, my own inner knowing, being connected with Holy Spirit, divine guidance, intuition, and pay attention to me!! As I am typing this maybe I will use ‘goincidence’ to remind me to go forth into the promise with the message! Anyway, just wanted to share that as we dive back into Galatians. Maybe it is God revealing a promise of sorts to me and gently or sometimes very loudly directing me into the next becoming.
It is the humans journey to evolve and become, but we have a choice and many of us choose to stay stunted, fixed, comfortable (even in the our discomfort and pain), checked out, numbed out, or we try to control and direct our steps and resist and stay closed off to divine guidance. So it is interesting to open and read this section of Galatians and see Paul use the illustration of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar today.. 🤔
Abram and Sarai received a promise from God. Something that seemed completely impossible. Having children at Sarai’s older age of 90. They got impatient and took matters into their own hands, because they werent’ patient and they didn’t trust and have faith. So Abram conceived a child with their slave Hagar. This represents those who live under the enslavement to the law. God did fulfill his promise as promised and Sarah’s child Isaac represents freedom. She is the mother of all free people and nations.
“The Scriptures say that Abraham had two sons, one from his slave wife and one from his freeborn wife. The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise. These two women serve as an illustration of God’s two covenants. The first woman, Hagar, represents Mount Sinai where people received the law that enslaved them. And now Jerusalem is just like Mount Sinai in Arabia, because she and her children live in slavery to the law. But the other woman, Sarah, represents the heavenly Jerusalem. She is the free woman, and she is our mother.”
In order to come into freedom and become free, we have to first know what it means to feel enslaved. We have to come into being through experience. We are in a constant state of becoming. Much of the human body is literally renewing and in a constant state of becoming at a cellular level every 7 years, not all at once. So likewise is our own understanding, awareness, levels of consciousness, faith etc.. It is a never ending process of becoming. Learning how to be patient and live in freedom takes practice and is a maturing process. I think this is also why new names are given to people in the Bible. The enslaved or old self, and the new free self with the new covenant. We need to be tethered for a time with guardrails and guardians as we come into being free and confident in how to live that out.
You can see this reality in the prison world, many people intentionally seek to be imprisoned because freedom seems scary and overwhelming. It requires a lot of willingness to be responsible, work hard, make a lot of decisions, be good at self leadership. For many it seems like a good trade off to be subject to rules and others making decisions. When prisoners who have been incarcerated for a long time are granted freedom it is not unusual for them to want to go back to prison and many will go back to their old ways.
Many of us who think we are living in freedom are really not, we are living in prisons of our own making. I know I was doing this. I was a slave to trying to be ‘good’, whatever that means, trying to be liked, trying to do all the ‘right’ things. I felt like I was on a tight rope and while trying to carry all of this in balance perfectly. The thing about tight rope walking is that the rope as to be tight, the person walking as to be perfectly in balance and the things being carried have to be in balance and the conditions around the person walking have to be perfect.
Living life with other humans on earth is not like this. When we make this metaphor more realistic imagine walking a tight rope while carrying a wiggling toddle on one hip, while a crowd of people is simultaneously jeering at you, cheering you, trying to distract you, AND the wind is blowing the rope has slack and your foot itches. This is what trying to living according the law is like. The law will also ask you to do all of this while juggling! It is impossible, it is nerve wracking and exhausting.
Then we go to church and many of us get the message that we just don’t have enough faith on top of all of this, we are being christian enough and doing our devotions or praying ‘effectively’ enough. Life is a war, we are in a battle and we need to armor up and fight a cunning serpent and lions. Oh my goodness, no wonder so many of us are seeking temporary comfort and distraction in alcohol, food, tv, our phones, shopping and and and …
God says he is our refuge, our rest, all we really need to do is be still and know. When you get tired of being condemned and living according to the law, open your whole self to grace and love. Relax and let God be God, just receive and be an open vessel. I know it seems too good to be true, and why wouldn’t it when we believed all the stuff I described above. I am coming into this new way of being and it is heavenly.
