📝 Reflection
Galatians 3: 18-19
’For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise. Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people. '
Here comes the law of paradox again. We can’t know and comprehend the magnitude of grace unless we have been far from it. We can’t know what freedom through Christ and God’s love means unless we have experienced being held prisoner by the law. The law condemns, no matter how hard we try to keep it, we can’t do it perfectly. In fact the harder we try the worse we become.
The definition of the word promise is: a declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen. So again back to paradox, in order for a promise to come to fruition the state of not having what ever is promised has to first exist. It is interesting though how Paul points out that the promise was given to Abraham along side the law.
We need guide rails of the law as we learn how to live this human life well. In fact Paul refers to the law as just that - a guardian. 'Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian. ‘
I have really been giving this a lot of thought and I keep going back to my college days. I was not ready for the freedom of college and not being at home under the guardianship of my parents and rules. I am naturally a rule follower and a ‘good girl’, but with no rules I gorged on my freedom. In fact, I ended up in the hospital with anemia. I literally exhausted myself enjoying ever ounce of freedom. I didn’t sleep, I spent hours with friends, and exploring all this new life had to offer.
This was a wakeup call for me. I had to learn how to self lead and figure out how to live in freedom without killing myself. Just like our parents know better what we need and set loving limits for us for our own good, God is the ultimate parent. If our earthly parents love us, just imaging how much God loves you and how he wants the best for you. Maybe you don’t have that loving relationship with one or both of your parents and and that might be part of your journey of faith.
Hold onto the promise, if you are still holding tight to living by rules and laws and trying to earn love. If you just can’t really wrap your head around grace and it just seems too good to be true. That is for other people and not meant for you. Hold onto the promise and keep asking for your eyes and heart to be open. Humble yourself enough to receive the promise. Trust in God’s ways and his timing, when freedom comes it is worth the wait and all it took to get you there!
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
If you haven't experienced the fulfillment of the promise how can you have hope that the promise is still waiting for you? If you have accepted the fullness of grace and God's love, how can you help encourage others to hold onto the promise?
