2 Corinthians 11: 10-11
“As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, no one in all of Greece will ever stop me from boasting about this. Why? Because I don’t love you? God knows that I do.”
To me in this continued ‘defense’ of pursuing the well being of the Corinthians and the development of their faith, Paul is showing us what love compels us to do. He understands how vulnerable ‘new’ faith is and a burgeoning understanding of what grace and love are. When you first ‘get’ grace and love in the way God fully intends it is very overwhelming. Then the freedom that you realize that you have is also very ‘freeing’. But without guidance and guardrails we can be easily led offtrack.
It is not unlike being a baby who first realizes that they can stand and then they realize that they can walk. They mentally are ready to run and see where their little legs can take them. But it takes practice and lots of falling down before we get steady on our own. We need those who have strong legs near by to encourage us to keep going. We are vulnerable.
Paul understands this and he loves these people and sees the possibilities of what they will do if they grow in their faith and love. He desperately wants to nurture and encourage that. He will do anything, and he literally is compelled by love to endure hardships, get beaten, be thought as weak and even foolish, he refuses to take any money from them. Love want’s to spread its message and the way it ‘speaks’ for it self is by people like Paul who obey it’s commands even at his own peril.
This is how he is telling the people of Corinth of how to discern God’s genuine love from the counterfeits that they are being exposed to. I feel like I am in this very vulnerable place right now myself. My mind and heart have been opened and have a beginning understanding of love and grace, but I know I have to walk it out to ‘know’ it. I am trying to surround myself with those who are ahead of me and are strong in their walk so they can encourage me.
This is also what love does, it is self aware and humble. This I truly believe is the narrow gate that Jesus is referring to love without humility will not grow. The temptation of initial taste of freedom that love gives can send you right back down the rabbit hole of pride. Stay humble and allow yourself to be a beginner. We adults don’t like to do that, but it is the way.
