2 Corinthians 10: 7
'Look at the obvious facts. Those who say they belong to Christ must recognize that we belong to Christ as much as they do. ‘
In this part of the letter Paul is defending his authority, at least in the NLT that is how it is titled. And basically his argument is that the good news of love and grace speak for themselves. I love this verse above, because it states the obvious as obvious. As I was reading this I substituted the word love for Christ. ‘Those who say they belong to love must recognize that we belong to love just as much as they do.’
If God is love, then those who belong to love and live by love must recognize that others do too. Love is not limited to just a privileged few. That is not the nature of love. Paul says - look at the obvious, ‘I don’t have to defend myself, love speaks for itself’ ‘And if you are telling the truth by saying that you are living by and in God’s love then there is no problem here. He pulls their logical rug out from under them.
As I was thinking further about how love speaks for itself I was thinking of the analogy of a tree producing fruit. Fruit can’t grow by itself, it is a byproduct of the tree and its health and growth. Love is like the tree, and the natural fruit or byproducts are patience, gentleness, kindness, humility etc. Many of us try to be patient, be kind, be gentle, be good - thinking it will lead to love. We are trying to reverse engineer it.
I know this is what I was trying to do, not that I realized it at the time of course. I was doing my best with what I knew and what I understood at the time. When the truth of God’s word and love finally spoke for itself in me and to me and it made me crumble. It also humbled me and freed me- this I believe is salvation. I finally accepted the message of grace and love.
Because I am human this will take practice to live it out and really know it fully in my heart, but my mind has been opened to the truth. The scales have fallen off of my eyes. God’s mighty ‘weapons’ of love, grace, mercy, faith and hope finally broke through the strong walls of pride that were keeping my mind, heart and spirit in the dark and living according to my human reasoning. I was trying to earn love and making sure everyone else was too through works. Even though I was blind to this in myself. I was trying so hard to be good and focusing on growing the fruit that I was missing what love truly was. I was living by a false prideful version of it - a look a like replica. Making idols of goodness, service, niceness all the things. The law of paradox showed me my ‘sin’. 🤦♀️
'We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. ‘ 2 Corinthians 10:3-5
