📝 Reflection
2 Corinthians 8: 9
'You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich. '
God’s ways are not our ways! They often feel upside down and backwards from the way we are inclined and want to do things. We often want to learn to be, but we have to be then we will learn. This is the process of walking in faith. We often have to let go of what we think will make us ‘rich’ to learn that everything that we need for a truly rich life is already inside.
Jesus lived the way which is why he is the way. He role modeled that wealth is not found outside of us, it is inside. If we can willingly let go of what we cling to in this world we receive abundance in return. Sounds too good to be true I know. Actually it probably sounds terrible to most of us, because we can’t even comprehend it enough to entertain the thought. I know I used to be like that anyone that tried to tell me how great my life would be if I would just do xyz.
When xyz are what you believe that brings you joy and makes your life complete but you also know that xyz takes up a lot of your bandwidth, it is hard to imagine life without it. But ‘often on the other side of fear is everything you want’ (Jack Canfield). Jesus lived the abundant and free life and yet he was homeless and penniless. We divided time and history in his honor.
I am living proof as are countless others that the freedom that comes with discipline and surrendering is worth the price of admission. What I was holding onto so tightly was consuming me and sucking a lot of my time and energy that now free and being put to better use. As I slowly let go of what hinders me the more free I am and yet the more I want submit to the process of giving even more away for the sake of love and freedom.
I work to humble myself even though it sometimes feels threatening at the time and my ego is screaming in my head for protection and validation. There is such freedom and I feel like my spirit is becoming richer the more I can let go of my attachment to things, people, being liked, being understood, being appreciated. Interestingly as I force myself to ‘be’ this way even when it feels selfish, uncomfortable, vulnerable, risky the more I learn that people actually like me more, appreciate me more, respect me more, trust me more, and understand me more. This creates in me even more love and authenticity that I just want to give and reflect back more.
Holding onto restricts, letting go amplifies, magnifies and boomerangs back. Instead of learning to be, try being to learn. Flip the script, and learn to do the opposite of what your ego tells you. I call this my “opposite George’ tool - it is my favorite. If you are Seinfeld fan you will get the reference, if not go watch and enjoy and you’re welcome!
