📝 Reflection

 2 Corinthians 1: 3-5

“All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.”

My anchor ⚓️ life verse. This verse has encouraged me and comforted me many times in the last two decades since I began my faith walk. It reminds me of so many things:

  • that there is purpose in our pain and in our suffering
  • It helps me to remember that the temptation to isolate and withdraw is the enemy
  • to be open to receive comfort
  • a reminder that suffering is temporary
  • this too shall pass
  • suffering allows us to know what comfort is
  • when we receive comfort we learn how to pay it forward when the opportunity comes
  • it helps remind me to stay humble
  • It helps me be open to opportunities to help others
  • it helps push me to be vulnerable and open about my struggles and suffering so that I can offer comfort to others
  • growth happens in the valleys and in the struggles
  • suffering is an invitation into faith and abiding in God even when things hurt and they don’t make sense
  • my struggles help me to ‘own’ my faith and strengthen my personal relationship with God, love, others and life itself “for it is by your own faith that you stand firm”
  • develops character, strength, perseverance, endurance “for it is by your own faith that you stand firm”
  • it is my testimony, my life message from God, my living word

Sounds like a lot of great reasons to change our attitude, perspective and experience of suffering. I can be comforted just by knowing all of this. But then he comes in and does even more. He is so good. I love how this chapter ended. I have been so focused on the beginning all these years that I haven’t finished the ‘rest of the story’. God is a God of YES! He is not a genie in a bottle who grants our wishes, but he knows what is best for us even when sometimes that means suffering, hardships, challenges and struggles.

“As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says. For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory. It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.”
