📝 Reflection
1 Corinthians 13: 1-13
'If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.'
I am not sure how much I can add to this sweet and short chapter. Love keeps no record of wrongs, it is not jealous, boastful, proud or rude. It is patient and kind, it never gives up, never loses faith, it is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance. Sounds like the greatest thing to me.
The evidence of God’s love for creation is all around. Make sure you are taking time to participate in it. Your mind, body and spirit will be nourished by it. Stop for a moment right now and be in awe that your heart beats automatically for you, your lungs breath for you, your nervous system feels for you, your brain thinks all kinds of things, trees and plants create oxygen for us to breathe at just the right amount, and we create carbon dioxide for them.
We are living miracles living in a miracle, what’s not to love about that? Even in our darkest moments, we are held by something bigger beyond us if we will just be open to this truth. The temptations that Paul lists are the traps that we fall into and then miss the greatest blessing. If we prioritize our intellect, our faith, accomplishments, giving and our sacrifices and we don’t love we have gained nothing.
Our number one mission every day should be to learn how to love ourselves and others well. We can’t give what we don’t have. How can we effectively be an example of love to someone else if we are hating and abusing ourselves. We may be kind and doing our best to show love, but kindness is only one aspect of love. This is not meant to guilt or shame, being kind is a great start and it might be the best that we can do. I know it was my best for a long time and I know God will use it for good.
Leaning into learning the other qualities like patience, humbleness, respect, encouraging others, cooperation, not taking things personal, non judgmental, graceful, enduring, trustworthy, justice and truth seeking takes courage. It takes courage, honesty, self awareness and lots of intentional to live this way. It takes a lot of faith and hope to walk these characteristics, but step by step you will understand how much God loves all of his creation. Not only what seems good from your or my perspective.
