📝 Reflection
1 Corinthians 6:12
'You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything. '
Paul is specifically talking about conduct within the church and a personal code of ethics and conduct for believers in the church in these chapters. While this might not apply to each of us on a daily basis, with respect to the governing body of a church. The concept of having a personal code of ethics and a code of conduct is very important and very practical and applicable. Sometimes we like to think that what we do doesn’t affect others, but that just isn’t true. We are very vulnerable to group think and being easily influenced by others.
If we see someone we know, like and trust engaging in behavior that we know would not be beneficial for our wellbeing we can easily convince ourselves to rethink our position on this. We are vulnerable to persuasion even if it is not direct or intentional. Just by proximity and exposure it becomes normal and acceptable. We see evidence of this all around us. If you are not careful and aren’t clear on what you believe and what you find acceptable behavior and attitudes to be around you will start questioning whether it is really ‘that’ bad.
Paul compares this to yeast in bread….’Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? ‘ Many professions are governed by Boards that adopt and abide by a code of ethics and when you join these professional boards and get the benefits of saying that you are a designated member you are agreeing to abide by a code of ethics. This is often a factor that sets one professional apart from another and gives confidence to clients and customers. These codes of ethics are a guide to each individual on how to conduct their business with each other and with the public.
Having a personal code of ethics is worth spending some time on and defining for yourself. It will give you a sense of clarity. This code is a guide that will help you avoid getting caught in situations where your values and ethics will be compromised. Likewise it will also give you clarity and discernment on how handle yourself should you find yourself in a compromising situation. While we know we are not responsible for judging a person in their relationship with God, we are responsible to ourselves and community to judge behavior that does not align with our personal wellbeing. It is from an understanding and knowing that our hearts and minds are vulnerable. Having a personal code of ethics makes us less vulnerable. While we might need to take actions and make decisions about how and who we spend our time with we can always do it from a position of respect.
