📝 Reflection
1 Corinthians 3: 18-19
'For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. '
He traps the wise in their own cleverness. Has this ever happened to you? Have you outsmarted yourself? I know I have. We are inundated with news, opinions, advertising it is overwhelming and hard to discern the best course of action sometimes. I have been absolutely convinced at times to make big purchases or decisions that I later regretted and realized that it did not deliver what I thought it would. Trying to fix internal issues with external solutions is the hamster wheel I lived on for a long time. I though I was being wise at the time with many things that later proved to be foolish.
Paul is really trying to be patient and understanding here, but you can sense his frustrations coming through. He says look I tried to meet you where you are and you received it well, you built a good foundation for your faith, but then you went and started building a shoddy house on top of it. Thank goodness for the strong foundation because you will still be saved but when the ‘fires’ of life come along your house (life) will not withstand the fires if you don’t build a solid house on top of the foundation. He says you can’t have a strong foundation of God but then build a house of human logic or wisdom on top of that or the gospel according to a messenger like me. This will not stand up to the trials of life.
I couldn’t help but think of the three little pigs children’s fable as a good analogy. The wolf can represent the trials of life, the lies and the deceit of the ego, they will huff and puff and prowl around. Can your life and your human wisdom withstand the barrage? The ego tends to want to fight back and defend, which often just compounds the stress and then more problems arise. I think I am going to start calling my ego ‘me-go’, sounds like something a toddler would say.
You know what can withstand the barrage? Love, not only can it with stand but it can stand with strength and dignity even in the face of being thought of as foolish by human wisdom. That is why if, if , if I can catch my ‘mego’ before it reacts and take a breath, I have started to ask myself ‘what would love do here?’. Almost always it is not what ‘mego’ wants, but it is the better option that yields better consequences aka ‘fruit’ in the long run.
If this was’t motivation enough, Paul reminds us that we are the holy temple, both individually and collectively. Are we giving God (Love) a good place to dwell? If we don’t we will bear the fruit of that choice as well. Paul leaves us with these closing words: “So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you— whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.'
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
He traps the wise in their own cleverness. Has this ever happened to you? Have you outsmarted yourself? Has your 'mega' convinced you that something was wise that later proved to be foolish?
