Romans 15: 1
“We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves.”
Meet people where they are not where you are. This is how we encourage and build each other up. By meeting people where they are with love and humility, we invite them to more by our example, not necessarily our words. One of my favorite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson ~ “Who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying.” This doesn’t mean that you have deny where you are or to agree with where they are. There is a distinction. It goes back to agency. We are each responsible for our own lives, part of that responsibility is to encourage others by our example not just our words and deeds.
When you understand that, like or not, you are a leader, role model and sending a message with your life that changes the internal perspective. Many choose live there lives believing that ‘it is my life to do with what I want. What I do doesn’t effect others.’ WRONG 😑 You/we are free to deceive ourselves this way, but that doesn’t it make it truth. Consequences are a result of choices for better or worse.
The truth of understanding that we do have an effect on each other can humble us and simultaneously motivate us to build each other up and also to make sure we are being built up. In fact Paul role models this as well. He talks about his own personal goals and ambitions: “My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been started by someone else.” After laying out his plan and his ambitions he also goes on to thank many many people by name in chapter 16 who helped him and poured into the church.
Humility is the secret ingredient in all of this. Our own humility that we are not where we can be and that there is always room to grow and more to learn. There is no point of ‘arrival’ as a human. If you think you have arrived to some sort of ‘knowing’ that sets you apart or above this should be a big red flag 🚩!! I know it is for me now, I try to humble myself before falling now 🤪, but I stumble and fall more often than not. You know it is interesting as I am writing about this these last few days, God has given me an opportunity to practice! That ego is so stubborn and puts up a good fight, be ready!
It is worth fighting the ego and laying it down, resisting the temptation to defend and protect. Honesty and humility not only are prerequisites to love. Love leads to freedom, love is freedom. When there is no more need for conditions to be met, you are free, free indeed. Free to put all of your energy towards your ambitions and encouraging others and to step into their callings, purpose and ambitions. We humans seem to live in the tension of wanting safety, security and comfort, but we are only fulfilled when we feel that we have purpose and meaning. Purpose and meaning are usually only found outside of safety, security and comfort zones. Go figure, guess that is why we need God, who is within whom we are a part of and whom we are apart of. We are one. In his love we can step fearlessly into more.
