📝 Reflection
Romans 10: 1-3
“Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.”
So I have been thinking a lot about the law of paradox recently. Many humans have a deep desire to want to do the right thing, be good, do good, be thought of as good and right. But here is the thing, as soon as one does this you immediately put yourself in a position to judge and label others, the things they do, what they think and believe etc. Even when you do it according to God’s law, especially when you do it according to God’s law. This makes you and me self righteous.
Self righteousness separates us from God and from each other. This is what the Pharisees were doing. They thought of themselves as deserving, better than, earning because they were trying to keep the law. This by the law of paradox makes them not so good, not so right. The law actually makes us blind. Jesus came to teach us the spirit of the law and to be the conduit of grace and righteousness by faith alone. Then we just repeated the same mistake we came along and made a religion out of Jesus and created the same paradox for ourselves, a system of self righteousness that exists in many churches and religions today. Not all, but many… unfortunately.
When you accept this gift, truly receive the magnitude of what it is and that you really can’t do anything to earn it, deserve it, work for it; it is humbling. This is what God wants from us more than anything. Humbleness and humility - the root of these words is ‘hum’ which means lowly of the earth. This is also part of the word human. The very thing he wants from us is in our ‘label’ to remind us. We are lowly of the earth, that is all he wants for us to be. Human. We were made to love God, love ourselves and love each other and to receive love from God.
We are freed from trying to become righteous, we are just asked to humble ourselves and believe the unbelievable which is to have faith. That’s it. Well also to be messengers to others through our lives and words, but this is more of a natural byproduct. We are freed from being the judge of ourselves and others. That is his job. When we can finally relax and accept we just get to be human and fully loved, this is what paradoxically unleashes us to become more. This frees us to love others, free to give this message to others and let them do with it what they will. Freedom is being saved from holding ourselves and others captive through continuing to try to become self righteous by rules, laws and good behavior. All of which mean nothing if the heart has not been transformed by faith and love. This is another paradox; laws block true agape or ‘unconditional God’ love, laws encourage conditional love and earning through performance and judgement.
As I am finally wrapping my head and heart personally around the magnitude of this, I can’t help but be humbled. I just get to be loved and and do my best, to share and express this love to others the best I can, let them know that this is available for them to experience too, be fully human and fully divine because Christ is in me.
Now this being said… I believe is why we are also encouraged to be in the word and humble ourselves daily. We have spiritual amnesia daily. Just like we have to feed our bodies, we have to feed our spirits. Our ego does not want to let go of the self in this way. The ego is hungry too, we get to choose which we feed. The word is all around us as well, just in case you think this instruction is limited to only reading the Bible, Paul reminds us of this by quoting from Psalm 19:
“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.”
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
How does the law of paradox help you understand God’s love for you? Do you find it interesting that the same word, hum, that is used for humble and humility is also in the word human? Can you see that thinking of ourselves as lowly actually lifts us up higher than we can on our own? Can you see the trap of self righteousness that our egos are drawn to like a moth to a flame 🔥.
