📝 Reflection

 Romans 4: 4-5

“When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.”

We are the only beings in the animal kingdom, at least that we know of, that can think about thinking. That can consciously and critically think and make choices, therefore we are the only beings granted with the gift of being able to choose to have faith. A lot of Paul’s discussion in these chapters is recounting the faith of Abraham. So I actually did something a bit different today, I went back to Genesis and also read a few chapters.

“Then the Lord said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.” Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!” And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” Genesis 15:4-6 NLT

This was just one of the passages that I read but it inspired me to go out in the wee dark hours before the sunrise this morning and put my chair in the middle of the yard and just gaze up at the stars. I was blessed with a cloudless clear view of the twinkling lights and a perfect bright half moon. It was awe inspiring and a humbling reminder that what I think on a daily basis that is a big deal and the things that can overwhelm me are not such a big deal. God will help me get the things done that need to get done.

If Abram and Sarai can wait patiently to have a son and have faith in God’s promises and timing then I can too.  “That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, “I have made you the father of many nations.” This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing.Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!””

Faith is a choice, it is active, you must act and walk despite not having proof, you must walk toward the promise, the vision, the dream, the goal… This the opposite way the human survival brain works, we want proof and assurance first then we will move. But this is not God’s way. Because those before us have walked in faith and had great promises fulfilled, the seemingly impossible made possible, goals accomplished etc. we can be encouraged to have faith as well. A faith that is living, active and moving.

As I was sitting there watching the sunrise I noticed that the stars that I could see so clearly in the darker sky slowly faded from my sight and I could no longer see them. Does that mean they aren’t there? Absolutely not. We should see the desires, dreams, visions and promises that God places in our hearts in the same way. We get a clear vision, but then the day of normal life comes along and we may lose sight of them and our logical brain might want to come along and convince us that we were just imaging things, that it wasn’t real, or not meant for us. Don’t let that happen! Hang onto this metaphor of the night sky and stars, they are still there just because you can’t always see them clearly keep the knowing in your heart, have faith and live from that faith. Don’t hide it away to lay dormant and decay.. you hear this advice from the dying every day!

“And because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous. And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn’t just for Abraham’s benefit. It was recorded”

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

Has there been a time when you have received a vision, had a dream, an aspiration or goal? Have you acted on it? God wants to partner with you in this life to do special and important things that only you can do. Choose to have faith in Him and the courage to have faith in yourself, it is a gift! You are a gift. What gifts do you have inside that you have kept hidden that if you stepped out in faith God could use in a mighty way.

BTW Mighty can be being a great SAHP and homeschooling the next prodigy, it might be being a caretaker to someone who is dying and showing them the gift of tender mercy and love, it might be going to therapy to be and begin the change in a dysfunctional family, it might be putting down the wine glass or the fork and taking ownership of your life, it might be moving your body more, it might be a creative talent that needs to be shared with the world, so many things it does’t have to mean putting yourself out there publicly in a big way with a fancy title (although it could).
