 Day 2

📝 Reflection

 Genesis 4:2-16 NLT

“Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground. When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord. Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.

“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him.

Afterward the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?”

“I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”

But the Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground! Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood. No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.”

Cain replied to the Lord, “My punishment is too great for me to bear! You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!”

The Lord replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him. So Cain left the Lord’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.”

Although we are told in Chapter 5 of Genesis that Adam and Eve have many children, we are introduced to and given this story of two of their children; the brothers Cain and Abel. I think they are meant to represent the two fold nature of every man. We are each two sides of the same coin. We have core motivations and fears that drive us. Depending on which direction we decide to go and which side of us is in control.

Lets back up for just a bit. Names are important in the Bible. The name Adam means of the earth. Eve means source of life. Cain means spear(er)bought, possessed or made.  Abel means breath, vapor, breathing spirit or son. So we have an earthly man and the source of life, having children together. And the made or possessed one kills (spears) the son or breathing spirit. Interesting when you re-tell the story this way. Anyway, back to the story.

I believe Cain and Abel are here to tell us about ourselves and the duality that lives within each of us. We have the lower, survival self or ego and the higher self, or whatever language you want to use. Abel represents the higher self and Cain the lower. This is usually how it plays out within in us as well. ‘Sin’ usually ‘wins’. The reference to the seven fold punishment I believe is the introduction of the seven deadly sins that we will learn more about through out scripture.

God warns and instructs Cain, ‘you must subdue it and be it’s master’. This is our warning and instruction to. We must subdue our ego and be it’s master. Or we will have a fate similar to Cain, we will be homeless, restless and wandering through life. The name Nod, means wandering.

Cain is separated from God, from being at home. Isn’t it interesting that Nod and God are similar. When we learn to get our higher self in the drivers seat, we will be at home with God. Because God is our natural home, where we feel at rest, at peace, no longer wandering. Sin drags around, it is insatiable, it keeps us wandering.

I know, this has been my story literally. I moved every year growing up as a kid. Raised by parents, especially my father who was mastered by his lower self but also loved God. But he was on the run from his own demons I think. This stuff is generational. This story is also told by the rest of the story in chapter 4. Lamech who is the great great great grandson of Cain. But that is enough for today, you can read the rest of that story and about the family line of Cain for yourself.

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

How does this idea of Cain and Abel representing the two sides at odds with each other within you? Who is in the drivers seat? Are you restless or at peace?
