📝 Reflection
Proverbs 16: 3
Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.
The word synergy came to mind as I was meditating and praying this morning. This word means to work together. I think this is what this verse actually is talking about. God is not a genie in a bottle who will just grant our wishes and make our plans succeed. This verse when you break it down is pretty specific combination and formula of how to you will find success. First you have to commit your plans or actions to the Lord. Commitment usually involves working together or with something and or someone, with an understanding of some overall governing ‘rules’ and expectations of how to work together.
There are a couple of teachers, mentors and authors that I would love to introduce to you. One teacher and author I have particularly resonated with and learned a lot from is Michael Singer, author of the Untethered Soul and The Surrender Experiment. He himself is not a Christian but he uses the term God quite a bit and also the concept of cooperating or surrendering with ‘life’. He committed to surrendering himself to ‘life’ rather than holding too tightly to his own plans. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own ideas, goals and plans. But he holds it all pretty loosely, spend a lot of time in prayer and meditation and surrenders and works with life vs. holding to tightly to HIS own agenda. I highly recommend his work.
When we hold too tightly to our own plans, agenda and ideas we create resistance which can often block the very success we are praying, seeking or thinking we are ‘committing’ to. It is ‘our’ way or the highway and we can miss the subtle ways God is trying to guide and course correct us on our path to success. Another favorite teacher, mentor and author of mine is Byron Katie who wrote Loving What Is and has created a process of inquiry called The Work. Her philosophy is similar, she has learned to ‘love what is’ and work with reality and life vs resisting it. This doesn’t mean being passive or not having your own plans and working towards them. Quite the opposite. When we resist or hold too tightly to our own perceptions, beliefs, plans etc.. we suffer.
Another one of my favorite authors is Henry Cloud, I recently read his book ‘Integrity’ - his understanding of integrity is very similar to Byron Katie and Michael Singer. “Integrity - more than simple honesty, it’s the key to success. A person with integrity has the ability to pull everything together, to make it all happen no matter how challenging the circumstances. Integrity is the courage to meet the demands of reality.” Sounds a lot like synergy to me and also similar to what the other two teachers and authors I mentioned put forth, which to me sounds a like like what Solomon is saying in the above verse.
Lets use an analogy, I love analogies since they help me visualize which helps me deepen my understanding. For example, let’s take the electronic devices that we depend on - a phone and/or tablet and/or pc or laptop. The technology today allows everything to ‘sync’ up. We have a lot of cloud ☁️ based technology now that allows our devices to work together synergistically which is pretty amazing when I think about it. As I am typing this I am using my tablet, but I can easily put it down, pick up my phone or my laptop and pick up right where I left off interchangeably. When they don’t sync up we get frustrated, right?! This happened to me the other day; my link to my one of my cloud accounts got disconnected on one device but not another but I didn’t notice so I missed an important email that I needed to respond to. Luckily I did see it on another device and then noticed what happened and fixed it.
This can happen to us, we can lose our connection or not sync up with God through prayer etc, and then we miss something important that had we been tuned in… He is so gracious that he will often use multiple methods to get our attention and give us ‘re-routing’ opportunities. But if you aren’t doing your part and tuning in and getting quiet and connecting and mindful and paying attention……. It is a working together synergistic relationship!
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
Are you doing your part? Are you frustrated by your lack of success in an area, are you so focused on your own plans and trying so hard but not getting the results you want? Maybe trying applying this concept of synergy more in your life.
