📝 Reflection
Genesis: 3-11
'Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him. One night Joseph had a dream, and when he told his brothers about it, they hated him more than ever. “Listen to this dream,” he said. “We were out in the field, tying up bundles of grain. Suddenly my bundle stood up, and your bundles all gathered around and bowed low before mine!” His brothers responded, “So you think you will be our king, do you? Do you actually think you will reign over us?” And they hated him all the more because of his dreams and the way he talked about them. Soon Joseph had another dream, and again he told his brothers about it. “Listen, I have had another dream,” he said. “The sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed low before me!” This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?” But while his brothers were jealous of Joseph, his father wondered what the dreams meant. '
Today we are staying at a high level and reflecting on the story of Joseph. This is the story that is told in Chapters 37-50 of Genesis. The verses above set up the story pretty well. Joseph was the first born son of Jacob and Rachels union and the second born to Jacob. Interesting to make note of this, in light of some of the previous reflections int he first half of Genesis. Interesting that the final quarter of Genesis is dedicated to the story of Joseph. Joseph is Both the first born and the second born 📝. I am going to do my best to give a cliff notes version of the story, but it is of course worth taking the time to read for yourself, because I will not be including all the interesting details, subplots and side stories which are so rich and pack with deep message and insight.
Jospeh was the favorite son of Jacob and his brothers were jealous of him and after these big dreams he has they decide to kill him. The oldest brother Reuben has a ‘better’ idea and they decide to throw him in a pit, an empty cistern. Reuben was planning on returning to rescue him. He leaves the scene of the crime and the other brothers steal Josephs coat and see a caravan of traders approaching and they have an even better idea. They decide to sell him into slavery. They dip Josep’s coat in blood to show it to their father and convince him that Joesph must have been eaten by wild animals. Joseph is sold to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. He was so impressed with Joseph that he made him is personal assistant. Potiphar’s wife also like him very much, in fact too much. She was pursuing him, Joseph declined her advanced but she eventually got angry and falsely accused Joseph of attaching her. Joseph was thrown into prison. There he interpreted some dreams for Pharaoh’s cup bearer and baker, which ended up coming true.
Fast forward, Pharaoh has some very disturbing dreams that no one is able to interpret. The cub bearer remembers Joseph. BTW this was more than two years later. Pharaoh summons Joesph, he interprets Pharaoh’s dreams correctly and is appointed to governor of Egypt. He grows very rich as well as helping increase the wealth of Pharaoh and Egypt. In a time of famine years later, Josephs brothers come to Egypt in search of food.
So even though it takes years to unfold and Joseph was sold into slavery and imprisoned, his dreams did indeed end up coming true. Interestingly Joseph recognized them immediately, but they don’t recognize him. He puts them through a few trials to a bit of satisfaction and vengeance, but eventually he reveals his identity to them, gets very emotional and they reunite. They beg for forgiveness, but much like his father he seems to be grateful for all of it. He sees God’s hand of provision and providence over all of the events of his life that brought him to such a prominent position in Egypt.
'“Please, come closer,” he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, “I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. This famine that has ravaged the land for two years will last five more years, and there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. So it was God who sent me here, not you! And he is the one who made me an adviser to Pharaoh—the manager of his entire palace and the governor of all Egypt. 'Genesis 45:4-8
I hope this inspires you and motivates you to have the patient confidence to go after the dreams in your heart. Speak them out loud, knowing that they might ruffle feathers and even get you into trouble. That trouble might just be part of God’s plan of the unfolding. See God’s hand in all of life and all of the circumstance. Even when our fellow humans betray us, hurt us, lie about us keep showing up and doing your best. Joseph kept being of service whatever situation he was in and kept showing up doing his best with patient confidence. His dreams became reality, it took some time, but big dreams often do!

Is there a dream stored away in your heart that you have never shared? Have you kept it hidden away with doubt and fear? What if you shared it and gave it time and space to unfold?
