 Day 67- Choosing Your Battles

📝 Reflection

 1 Chronicles 11: 22

There was also Benaiah so of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. he did many heroic deeds, which included killing two champions of Moab. Another time, on a snowy day he chased a lion into a pit and killed it.

Well isn’t this a strange story to stick in the middle of a scripture?  Believe it or not at the time of writing this, just yesterday we had rain and storms and it actually got me wondering why we don’t get much weather described in the back drop of bible stories. Literally a random thought I had just within the last 24 hours, and then God gives me a weather report! God is like that, he gets into the details of our lives and thoughts, he is that personal. That is another overall takeaway from the nature and structure of the books of Chronicles, he gets personal and lists names and families etc. because they all matter to him, they all play a role in HIStory. You matter too!

As I meditated on this scripture I really started noticing just how unusual this is.  These stories all take place in the Middle East where it doesn’t snow, except maybe on a very rare occurrence. Lions are built for heat and warm weather. Put these two facts together, I am guessing that this Lion posed an even greater threat than it normally would. He was not only cold, but probably also hungry and disoriented by the conditions he now found himself in, very unpredictable. Benaiah being a great warrior, must have also thought about this. I can picture he and his men camping and hearing the noise of this predator around them lurking, growling and prowling.

He decided to choose his battle and go on the offense with this beast.  The other option might have been to just wait and only respond or defend if an attack happened, rather than choosing to face the danger now even if it didn’t seem imminent. Most of us can certainly understand why one might be tempted to just take our chances and just hope that the Lion moves on.  The thing about hoping problems just go away is that you also can get weaker in the process, caught off guard, meanwhile the situation just gets bigger and more complicated to deal with. All of this combined then puts you at a disadvantage at the time when you might need to battle. I think Benaiah was strategic and thought all of this through. I can imagine his thoughts going something like this: ‘I would rather face the Lion now while I know what condition I am in, the condition of the Lion of the situation - I know all of the variables. If I wait, I won’t… so now is really the best strategy and going into battle and choosing this battle.’

✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt

Hopefully you are tracking with me and see the analogy of the lion in this story as a problem or situation that you might have going on. What is your lion? What are your circumstances surrounding you and the Lion. Are you thinking strategically and courageously or are you waiting, denying and hoping you can just get lucky and it will go away?  The chances of that happening are probably not in your favor just like Benaiah also concluded. He knew who he was, whose he was, and the conditions around him, his own condition, he chose to go into battle strategically knowing the variables rather than risking being caught off guard and at a disadvantage.  How can you relate to this story and analogy?
