📝 Reflection

 Isaiah 58: 6-7

“No, this the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hubby, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.”

Isaiah 58:13

“Keep the Sabbath day holy, Don’t pursue your own interests on that day, but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day. Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don't’ follow your own desires or talk idly.”

I read a book called the Biology of Desire by Marc Lewis, PhD, a couple of years ago and it was fascinating. We need desire biologically, it is what drives us and what keeps us alive literally. Our desires are also very strong and we can create maladaptive relationships with them and with the things that are the object of our desire. Patterns of behavior and habits can be so ingrained that the desire process starts at just the thought or the anticipation of the thing, time of day, the feeling etc. We are kind of like Pavlov’s dogs and if we aren’t intentional or awake to why we do what we do we can get very off track very quickly, and then we are in so deep and the desires are so strong that we feel like we have no choice any more. This is why people use analogies like being enslaved, being chained etc..

As we having been exploring the team of selves that we are; mind, body and spirit and how our spirit is our MVP. We need to pay attention to feeding and nourishing the spiritual part of ourselves. This is what practices like fasting and sabbath rest are for. We deny or put the physical self on the bench for a period to rest, so that we can feed our spirit in a way and with fuel that nourishes, feeds and gives it renewed energy. Think of yourself being like a hybrid 🚙 vehicle. You have 2 sources of fuel you run off of, but if you don’t take advantage of the other fuel source, and you deplete and only treat yourself as a car that runs on gas and ignore the other aspect of yourself - you are missing out on your true potential and God’s potential in and through you.

In order to fuel our spirit, we need to feed it. It isn’t just about denying the physical body’s needs. It is about getting the needs of the spirit met - doing the things that God cares about, helping and serving others. If we do this while fasting the physical body we will be able to truly tune into how much this truly nourishes and feeds this part of ourselves. By fasting in this sense I also mean through resting the physical body. This is really fascinating for me to think about. I think we all inherently know and have felt the benefits and the reality of how good it feels to help others. But with this additional reasoning and explanation, I feel like I might be willing to subdue my desires biologically for the benefit of my spiritual nourishment, renewal and energy.
