📝 Reflection
Luke 6: 31-42
Do to others as you would like them to do to you. “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should get credit? Even sinners do that much! And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, why should you get credit? Even sinners will lend to other sinners for a full return. “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is know to those who are unthankful and wicked. You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all comeback against you. Forgive others and you will be forgiven. Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full- pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” Then Jesus gave the following illustration; “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t they both fall into a ditch? Students are no greater than their teacher. But the student who is fully trained will become like the teacher. “ And why worry about a speck in your friends eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think saying, “Friend, let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye’, when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
I know I am quoting more scripture that normal today, but Luke 6 speaks so practically and plainly! Not a lot of use of parables in this chapter. Jesus cuts the heart of the matter, which is our hearts! What limits us is our human limitation to love 💗 each other. We love conditionally, and God calls us to his kind of love which is unconditional. Human conditional love is short sighted, unconditional love is big and requires big picture thinking.
Luke chapter six starts off with a couple of examples of the religious leaders of the day trying to ‘catch’ Jesus breaking the rules of the sabbath. He turns the tables on the religious rule followers and asks vs 9 “I have a question for you. Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?”
Now big picture thinking is easier said than done, especially big picture on everything that we do. I actually think this is part of the praying continually encouragement that we get from the Bible. That requires mindfulness and intention and pausing before acting, reacting, speaking etc.. This type of devoted way of living allows us to pull back and think about what consequences we are inviting into our lives. I know for me, I am pretty good at keeping the big picture in mind with some things and then on some of my daily interactions and decisions, I forget and get caught up in the moment and get very short sighted, thinking or forgetting to think about what am I causing.
It says it pretty plainly here in these verses, whatever energy we put out in the world and towards others WILL come back to us! Choose wisely! In order to consciously choose we have to pause and zoom out and zoom ahead. This pause and conscious choice for me is an act of prayer. I have started to ask myself the following question when I am successful at pausing in the moment: What would Love do or say here?
I have not been successful all the time in the moment nor will I ever be able to be, because I am human. I know with practice I will get better and so can you! The good news about God and prayer is that it is not limited in the way we are by time and space, so as soon as you realize you acted out of auto pilot and ego reaction, you can pause, pray, think big picture, as yourself a good question (feel free to borrow mine) and ask from wisdom what you can do now to repair, pivot and go forward in Love.
✍🏼Daily Journal Prompt
How can you practice big picture thinking or big love? Where are you falling prey to shortsighted reacting vs. praying for the bigger vision and insight that Godly love can bring?
