Exodus 3:1-4
'One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.” When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied. '
This morning I was reading the story of Moses and the burning bush. This story is a great illustration of curiosity. If you saw a burning bush what would you do? Our first instinct might be to be afraid and move away from such strange sight, but Moses was curious and that led to a personal encounter with God.
Last night I was on a coaching call and we were talking about the importance of curiosity. This is such a critical ingredient but sometimes overlooked part of the transformation journey. Not just our journey to transform our relationship with alcohol but so much more - how we transform our relationships to everything that we interact with in our lives; ourselves, substances, habits, others, God, faith...
Curiosity allows for learning, being open, playfulness, adventure, faith, experimenting and trying new and different. It also helps us to stay out of fear, perfectionism, white knuckling, judgement and the spirit of 'just trying harder; which can all block progress.
