Day 130- Are you treading water

📝 Reflection

 Proverbs 24: 10

If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small.

So this verse caught my attention. So far Proverbs is written in contrast form. Here is what is wise, then here is what is foolish or bad. Here this verse is all by it’s lonesome. Intriguing. So is failing under pressure not about wisdom or foolishness but rather strength and fortitude? Interesting or maybe a mixture? There is a bit of wisdom there, but not enough, it hasn’t had enough practice and time to get strong. Rather than a ‘permanent’ failure this is something that can be worked on and valuable feedback.

An analogy came to mind, this is probably not a surprise, my brain really likes stories and analogies. They really help me understand things better, I think that is true for a lot of us. Anyway, I was a life guard and swim instructor in high school and college during my summers. For the sake of the analogy lets pretend that life is a big body of water. Most of us are just thrown in and left to figure it out for ourselves. Some of might have had some sort of lessons from the adults in our lives. This is akin to the blind leading the blind. So a lot of us don’t become skilled swimmers in this thing called life, a lot of us feel pretty good just treading water, floating, maybe even a little dog paddle or breast stroke if we are lucky.

Most of us live our whole lives this way. Because ‘hey we are surviving and we are even keeping our heads above water.’  As we look around, we might notice that there are some people that are doing things that we can’t. They are swimming, they are able to go places and do more exciting things. As we watch we might start thinking to ourselves, ‘I want to do that’ 'could I do that?’.  We might then learn that there are people that teach these skills. Great! Some us us will go hire these people and start to learn even though it is a lot of hard work and practice. Others will decide they just don’t have the time and decide to be satisfied with just surviving and treading water, because this is ‘easier’.

But then a big unexpected wave comes along or some undertow. Now treading water isn’t quite enough. You panic. Hopefully a lifeguard will be nearby with the skills and knowledge to help you survive.  A wise lifeguard will hopefully also talk with you after this and say, hey have you thought about learning to swim? Depending on your answer they may also give you some other recommendations on how to get a little stronger or avoid danger if you are unwilling or unable to swim.  There is hope, there is always hope to get stronger and wiser as long as you have breath in your lungs. Life is much better when you develop the skills to interact and work with it, vs just surviving with the bare minimum skills and strength.

One of my favorite quotes is ‘choose your hard’. It is hard to learn how to swim in the waters of life, but it also a lot more rewarding and fun. It is really hard to tread water and watch others doing all the things. So the point of the quote is, you never avoid doing something hard, you just pick which hard you want.

Also, every time a wave comes and I panic I risk a lifeguard not being there. The other thing that happens when you panic in the water is you grab onto anyone, this scenario is particularly scary and multiple people are now at risk for drowning. This analogy can go deeper and wider with other aspects .. but that is for another day.
