📝 Reflection
Isaiah 49: 11
And I will make my mountains into level paths for them. The highways will be raised above the valleys.
What are these verses really saying? Obviously we can’t take them literally. There are a lot of very similar metaphorical verses throughout scripture. As I was asking God for some help understanding this, the concept of an a MVP 🤷♀️came to mind. When I think of someone that has achieved this recognition, they make doing whatever they have become very good at look like it comes easily and naturally. When you look at the whole path of what it took to get to that point you see there was a lot of work, time, effort, energy, devotion, practice, along with any natural ability or gifts that person might have. Sometimes we look at that and say I could never do that and we give too much credit to natural ability and talent. The MVP will tell you it was all the other stuff that made it possible.
The MVP is also not always the ‘best’ player, it is the player that is most valuable to the team as a whole. They are good, but they also make the whole team better because of their contribution, their attitude, their team spirit, and likely leadership as well. So then I got to thinking about the team of the human self - Body, Mind & Spirit. Then when I also apply God’s constant reminder that His ways are not our ways with respect to looking at our internal team. I think most of us, me included 🙋♀️, live mostly from the body and mind as a duo team, and then if we have time we might let our spirit have a little role on the side separate from the team, we view that part of us more like the ‘water boy’. When it comes to spirit we often also treat it as if it is separate and relegated only for a certain time of day or a day of the week, and then we get back ‘real’ life. What if we treated our spirit like it was the MVP (because I think it really is) and we spent time, energy, practice, and devotion from that perspective? I think it might help us feel like the rest of our lives are on level paths versus feeling like climbing mountains, we might make highways for ourselves vs. having to go into all of the valleys that we find ourselves in.
As I am spending more and more time personally on my spirit and connecting to the ‘big’ spirit I feel like it is making the rest of my life a bit ‘smoother’. There is something different happening, my spirit is getting the attention it needs and it feels nourishing, it is making the whole team of me operate better, calmer and at a higher level. I think because we don’t fully understand our spiritual self we tend to neglect or not put it the proper position in our lives. It speaks a different language and one that can only be understood and directed by the bigger spirit, aka God or whatever your spiritual beliefs label it.
Here is another scene that came into my mind, play along with me. Lets pretend our spirit has the power and utility to be a like car in our lives. Many of us live our lives running around on foot, when we have access to go on the highways of life in a car. Instead we are hiking the daily mountains 🧗♀️and valleys on foot. We occasionally take our car/spirit to the gas station and fill it up, but then we leave it parked there or drive it right back home. We continue running around on foot and then come back to our cars, which also probably has a hole in the tank, because the tanks are empty when we come back to check on our cars. So we get back into the car and fill it back up, get it started make sure it is still running. Engine sounds good, so then we get back out of the car and then start running around again on foot. Sounds kind of silly right?
I wonder if God is looking down and shaking his head. He has given us all the tools, directions, a team of selves, access to Himself and instructions on how to create an MVP and a winning team, but we don’t get it. The part of us that can get it and speaks the spiritual language that we need to decode all of this doesn’t get playing time in the game. We have not developed our MVP and for some of us that are doing a lot of spiritual work but still not feeling this difference, maybe we are still not seeing the spirt as a integral part of the team and we are leaving it on the bench and treating is a separate thing we ‘do’ maybe in the mornings or on Sundays.
There is no judgement here - I think I just had a bit of a v-8 moment this morning myself and I have been devoted to spending this time and integrating into my life for almost six months now, but just like the MVP didn’t just roll out of bed and walk on the field for the first time being the MVP, there was a process. You start as a rookie and then you just keep showing up even when you aren’t seeing or feeling the results. You trust the process, having faith, knowing, if I work hard, show up, consistently, day after day, hour after hour, this eventually leads to becoming who you are and what was once hard now seams easier, ‘you get it’ because ‘you do it’ and ‘then you can see it’ and then be it, and then you just keep going…always room to improve and get better and develop skills.
