📖Daily Reading

 Zephaniah

Join me on my morning walk as we rise and shine together by walking through the Bible daily and learn a practical applicable coaching nugget from the ultimate life coach - our creator (whatever that means to you). No judgement zone here, all are welcome, we are all on a spiritual journey because we are after all spiritual beings having a human experience.

📝 Reflection

 Zephaniah 1: 5-6

“For they go up to their roofs and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the Lord, but then they worship Molech, too.  And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the Lord’s guidance or seek my blessings.”

Not throwing any stones here, I know I don’t walk my talk in all areas of life and I am working on this. To me Zephaniah in a nut shell is sending this message from God, when you know better you do better to the extend that you can. There were a lot of people who knew better and were not doing better.  God can actually deal with foolishness that comes from ignorance more than he can with foolishness that comes from those that ‘claim’ to know better.

I was really living from this place for a long time, or rather not living but surviving, and it felt very ‘violent’ inside. When you are not living from an aligned place, you feel scattered, divided and at war with yourself. The fancy psychological term for this is cognitive dissonance. As an enneagram 9, the ‘peacemaker’ I am very vulnerable to this. Part of the way my brain works is that I see and often understand all perspectives, sides, and opinions. In order to do this, my brain simultaneously wants to suppress my own perspective and opinion.  This is a blessing and a curse, like it is for most of us. Our best characteristics can also be our worst if we don’t have self awareness and live from conscious aligned intention.

What can naturally happen to me is that I can easily fall into people pleasing, co-dependent, and ‘merging’ behaviors. One of my core fears is disconnection and disharmony, and my survival brain will try to convince me that having a strong opinion, stated value, or perspective that might differ from other people is that I will be disconnected from the pack. Humans are pack animals, so we all have our core fears and desires that drive our behavior even potentially against things that we ‘know better’ and that we claim we are aligned with.

It is worth taking the time to do an inventory and get clarity on what you believe and then getting your life and actions in alignment with what you belief. When you scatter yourself that is exactly how your life will feel internally and also the message you will be sending externally. It doesn’t jive and you know better, which just feels ‘wrong’. This wrong feeling then can actually amplify these feelings and interestingly can send us further into our behaviors that we don’t want just to ‘shut’ out the noise of our inner knowing that is seeking alignment.

Admitting that you are out of alignment takes humility and will humble you, which is why a lot of us avoid it. We don't’ like admitting that we are out of alignment, we feel shame, regret and guilt. These emotions can be very beneficial though if we use them to ‘wake’ up and get honest with ourselves. Admitting and course correcting especially in a public way can be so encouraging and beneficial to others. It feels counterintuitive, we are afraid people will think less of us, but the opposite is true!  Being out of alignment is a betrayal to yourself and others, and we know it! Being a liar to yourself is destructive, damaging and doubling down on it by denying it is prideful and arrogant.

Zephaniah 3: 9-12 says “Then I will purify the speech of all people, so that everyone can worship the Lord together. My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings. On that day you will not longer need to be ashamed, for you will no longer be rebels against me. I will remove all proud and arrogant people form among you. There will no more haughtiness on my holy mountain. Those who are left will be lowly and humble, for it is they who trust in the name of the Lord.
