📝 Reflection
Psalm 51: 12-15
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you.
Psalm 51 was written after David is confronted by his friend Nathan. We all need Nathan’s in our lives. Even with Nathan David had to be willing to confront his own sin and wrong doing and admit it. He was wracked with guilt to the point it was causing physical pain and anguish in his body. When we can be brutally honest with ourselves and admit when we are wrong, this is the first step toward healing. Many of us desperately want personal healing and change and we are praying and begging God for it and then wondering why it doesn’t come. This psalm here might give us a clue. Are we first admitting our role or wrong doing in the situation and the consequences we are dealing with? Just to be clear, I am not talking about people that are truly victims and dealing with something that is no fault of their own.
Here goes my own admission, I am dealing with the consequences of over eating and I am carrying extra weight on my body. Not just 10 vanity pounds, a significant amount of 50+ lbs. I have prayed and really worked on it, but one thing I have not fully done is admit that I am an over eater! I have done the work of admitting that I am or was an over-drinker and got to work and have found freedom in that area of my life. But I realized this morning after reading this that I had not fully admitting the truth that I am in fact someone that eats entirely too much. I if I did, that means I have to stop or just accept that I am ok with it and the consequences. Instead, I have tried to down play and minimize this, I have tried to blame it partly on aging and menopause, genetics, my husband, the stress of life etc… But the brutal truth is that I eat too much, maybe for some ‘valid’ reasons, but at the end of the day I weigh more than is healthy for my height and frame because I eat more than my body requires. Period.
There I said it. Now I have hope for finally dealing with it and getting back to a healthy weight. But even more than that I will eventually be able to help others who are dealing with the same habits and coping strategies, just like I do now with over-drinking. I am able to show others the way out of over drinking because I have been there myself. But before I could do that I had to admit that I was in fact an over-drinker. This is what makes me a trust worthy guide, because I have been there before. No matter how much training and education someone has for helping others with addiction, they can’t understand and help the way a fellow and former addict or over-doer can. They just don’t ‘get it’ the same way.
Likewise, I understand where my fellow grey area, over-drinkers are and I can give step by step directions and be a guide to help them also get to the other side. This is also what David says he will do, he doesn’t seek forgiveness just for his own sake, it is to help others and to give God glory in the process. This is God’s amazing and redemptive power - of his upside down kingdom. He will take your sin and use it for good and to grow His Kingdom and to help others out of their sin. When we can admit our faults, sins, bad habits and wrongdoings we not only help ourselves but we can be way showers to others.
Our ego’s and our survival brain tries to tell us the opposite. It tells us that we will be kicked out of the club if we admit this thing. This is a lie, the more we deny and isolate the more harmful and toxic this is to ourselves and others. Not only is it a lie, but the opposite is true. I of all people know this and yet I was still believing the lie myself. You like me, might be fooling yourself that what you are doing isn’t affecting anyone, but it isn’t true. We are all role models, examples and leaders whether we want to be or not. Think about the people that you trust the most in your life. Is it those that seem perfect? I bet it isn’t. When you want to deal with an issue or a problem, do you trust someone that hasn’t dealt with it before and or do you want someone that has first hand knowledge and experience? Think about it. Also, if you are hiding your imperfections and habits and putting up a good front, who might be missing out on your wisdom, help, guidances, experience, knowledge etc..? Let’s invest in each other by using God’s way by being honest and using our hard earned wisdom for good!
