📝 Reflection

 Ecclesiastes 3: 5

A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away.

If you have heard the Byrd’s song, “Turn, Turn, Turn”, then you are familiar with Ecclesiastes chapter 3. There is a time and a season for everything.  As I sat an reviewed the examples and the contrasts this verse stood out to me. Probably because it is an opportunity for growth. My natural tendency is to avoid conflict and all costs. The thought of ‘turning away’ or in other translations ‘refrain from embracing’ sounds harsh to me and unnatural, especially if it is something or someone that I at one time embraced. It also causes me pain and discomfort to watch this from the outside in others.

So the fact that even reading this causes my chest to tighten a bit is a bit of wisdom and an indication towards an area of opportunity for growth. It is the nature and the way of things to change. You may not be wired like me with regards to confrontation and this verse may not have a similar affect on you. I invite you to read this chapter for yourself and notice what verse triggers you?  What we resist persists, what we ignore lingers, better to deal with it so we can fulfill our potential.

The fullness of the human experience of life on earth is both/and, death and life, pain and joy, ease and struggle. The duality of life, but non-dualistic thinking doesn’t come naturally for many of us. Many are either/or black and white and have a tough time with grey area much less holding space for both/and.  This evolution in our thinking is a sign of our maturity and wisdom and as long as we are human there will always be room for growth. There is no point of ‘arrival’ or getting it! I love the way Father Richard Rohr sums it up in the title of one of his books “Falling Upward”.

I also looked up the meaning of the first half of this verse, the scattering and gathering of stones. This one is actually not well understood by even the best scholars. The consensus seems to be that after battle or when you want crops to rest, you scatter stones. It is a way to block, stop or destroy growth. Gathering stones is done to allow things to grow and also to build and fortify walls etc.. Interesting things to ponder in this chapter! Would love to hear your feedback on what your personal growth opportunity might be after reading this chapter?
