 Day 127- Home Maintenance

📝 Reflection

 Proverbs 20: 5

(NLT) Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out.

(NIV/ESV) The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.

So you might be looking at my heading today called ‘home’ maintenance and seeing this verse and scratching your head. But stick with me, I am going to use an analogy of home maintenance and more specifically the hvac system of a home. Although before we even start many of us say, understand and acknowledge that we often do take better care of our homes, cars, possessions, and other people than we take care of ourselves. We are running around ignoring ourselves and/or trying use quick fix solutions, doing the bare minimum and then wondering why we are so tired, overwhelmed and exhausted. 🤔

When we get still and really take the time and we look deep within we will hear our inner voice and wisdom telling us what we need to draw out. I know many of you will tell me that you don’t have the time, but I would encourage you that you don’t have time not too! Many of us are living in a house of cards🃏, and using quick fixes to holding things together with duct tape and convincing ourselves that things are ok as long as it looks like it from the outside. I implore you don’t wait until a health crisis, a divorce, prison, broken relationships, a career ending circumstance force you to take the time or even takes the opportunity away from you.  But if this is you that is ok too, some of us need to literally come to the end of ourselves in this way to find our way. As long as there is breath in your lungs, there is hope and opportunity for redemption.

Ok, on with the analogy. For an HVAC system to work properly and efficiently a lot needs to happen. The house itself needs to be properly ventilated so it can breathe, ducts need to be clean, ducts need to be sealed properly, vents need to be properly adjusted, filters need to replaced and kept clean, the control panel needs to be working, then of course there is the unit it self that needs to be kept running and in good working order.

If you don’t stay on top of this and monitor it, you can experience a lot of discomfort and potentially even health consequences. There are a couple of different approaches to maintenance: one is to wait until something goes wrong, and even then only do a quick fix, keep just patching and fixing to save money and time, filters probably get ignored, and only worry about getting to the root problem or replacing until you absolutely have t.

The other approach is to be proactive and regularly service the unit, have filters cleaned or replaced, testing and diagnosing and looking for any indications of potential issues brewing. You can probably see which is the ‘better’ approach and the one that will lead to not only to the system lasting longer, but the experience of living in the home that is maintained is probably also better and healthier. Those living in the first home, might be experiencing allergies, breathing issues, temperature and humidity fluctuations and blaming it on the area they live in or other aspects of their lives.

Are you seeing where I am going with this now? Why we often use the term ‘duct tape’ in referring to our lifestyle choices - quite literally, now you know why?! We know we should take the approach of the first homeowner, but we think it takes too much time and work, and we just don’t have it. So often the person, like yours truly, who choose the first approach aka the duct take approach, will eventually come to a crossroads moment.

If you choose wisely you will learn from your ways and choose to become like the homeowner in the second example. Our own home’s which are our bodies - which is the home of our mind, heart, soul and spirit deserve for us to be the like the second example, so do our loved ones and our communities!  This is why I do what I do everyday, to keep myself accountable to now choosing the better way, but also to encourage you to as well!

Often we need analogies like this so we can have 💡moments of ‘getting it’. Yes, it takes time to be proactive and have a maintenance approach to life, but in the end this actually not only saves us time it creates a whole new experience of life that can be had no other way. You too can draw this understanding out of your own deep waters when you take the time to go within.

BTW, the first verse of chapter 20 was “Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.”  Don’t shoot the messenger. A lot of people want to use the Bible to justify their drinking, me included 🙋‍♀️, after all Jesus’s first miracle was turning water into wine. But the Bible is also very clear that an occasional celebratory drink is not the same as someone who is a regular drinker or has been led astray. Wisdom and this lifestyle choice are not compatible, this verse is very clear about that. When I took the time to look within and begin my journey of healing and moving living and taking care of myself from like the first example to the second this was where I knew I had to start.
