📝 Reflection

Revelation 18: 3

'For all the nations have fallen because of the wine of her passionate immorality. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her. Because of her desires for extravagant luxury, the merchants of the world have grown rich.” '

The vision of the fall of Babylon and the collateral damage of those who glorified ‘her’ and relied on her for their own glory. This chapter is a poetic telling of the glory of Babylon and how many others glorified her wealth, opulence and got rich off of her. Then she is suddenly destroyed. When she is destroyed they are all destroyed along with her.

One of my favorite songs with thought provoking lyrics is “Closer to Fine’ by the Indigo Girls, one line in particular came to mind as I was reading this chapter “darkness has a hunger that is insatiable, and lightness has a call that is hard to hear, and I wrap my fear around me like a blanket, I sailed my ship of safely till I sank it.. now I am crawling upon your shores”

The moral of the story and the cautionary tale for all of us is that when we glorify things that can be gone in an instant we risk being devastated and without a compass or a ship when it sinks. In fact one of the examples in this chapter is that of a millstone being thrown into the water.. 21-23

'For all the nations have fallen because of the wine of her passionate immorality. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her. Because of her desires for extravagant luxury, the merchants of the world have grown rich.” Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a huge millstone. He threw it into the ocean and shouted, “Just like this, the great city Babylon will be thrown down with violence and will never be found again. The sound of harps, singers, flutes, and trumpets will never be heard in you again. No craftsmen and no trades will ever be found in you again. The sound of the mill will never be heard in you again. The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The happy voices of brides and grooms will never be heard in you again. For your merchants were the greatest in the world, and you deceived the nations with your sorceries. ‘

For the things of this world are not meant to last, so it is not an if, but when. Are you prepared for when?  If you don’t have a solid sense of self outside of your roles, your titles, your resources, your relationships, your status, your stuff etc… you will crumble when things change. There is only one thing in this world that is constant and unchanging, change. Well let me take that back, two things, God and change. Holding onto your identity in what is changeless in an ever changing world seems like a wise idea.

Giving glory to that which has always been, what will always be, what was before what has always been. We are but a vapor, a whisper in the wind. Let us remember our place in the universe and take advantage of the gift of life and be held in grace and love that are freely offered. Glorify our maker not things that man makes which are so temporary. How do we do this? I am learning to slow down and spend time in the quiet more and more.

We have been given the image of His laws being written on our hearts and minds. Have you ever tried and been successful at writing while on the move? Writing takes stillness. In order for something to be written on it, it takes time, careful attention, intimacy with the mind and body. As I have been writing this year, I feel I have first been written on. Humans are meant for this type of relationship with the divine consciousness of Christ. We literally were made for it and we feel ‘off' and we live ‘off’ when we don’t have it. When we glorify the things of this world there is a part of us that will always feel ‘off’.
